Thursday, August 28, 2003 + Happy Teachers' Day +

Tomorrow will be a half day in school. YAY! :) We're celebrating Teachers' Day tomorrow, and next Monday will be a school holiday. Yippie long weekend! :)

It has been a 'tradition' that the newbies (new teachers) always put up an item of sorts during the celebration and this year is no different. We'll be doing a skit based on the RJC incident, however ours has a happy ending (of course). We're donning the school uniform too.... I don't think I kept mine from my student days. Even if I did, I doubt I'll still be able to wear it! *sniffle* Gone are the days of my 25" waistline... *sobsob*

So for 5 minutes or so I'm going to make a fool of myself on stage tomorrow morning. Well I guess things like that don't happen very often, and after all the more ridiculous and embarassing it is, the higher the entertainment value. I just hope I don't fall flat on my face whilst on stage, or trip and fall coming on/going off the stage. That would really be hilarious I'm sure. Sigh. :P Like I'm always telling my students, "Sigh... the things I do for you people..."

Apart from the prospect of total loss of face tomorrow, I'm really looking forward to the weekend ahead. It's just about the only time I get to be with my fiance. *sniff* It feels somewhat as if he's still serving his NS and we can only meet during the weekend. I wish he'd hurry up, graduate, get his butt out of Uni and move back home. And then I wish he'd hurry up and get a job which pays him big bucks (hahaha) so we can get married and get our own place. Then once my bond is up I can stay home and be a 'tai tai' (English translation: Rich housewife who passes time by spending money, going for facials, teas and gossiping). That would be a life full of luxury but devoid of personal fulfillment.

Back to the topic of Teachers' Day, I suppose it's nice but it's not what gives me - as a teacher - satisfaction. I think the best satisfaction that a teacher gets is when one interacts with one's students and are able to recognize what makes them unique. It isn't really about making sure they get good results or receiving presents from them. Perhaps I'm still new to the profession and speak idealistically but I feel that the joy in teaching comes from recognizing the raw potential that they possess and trying your best to nurture them. Perhaps I'm just lucky that I'm in a good institution where the students are mostly well behaved and sensible. It's a humbling and yet wonderful thing to be surrounded by so many distinctly different minds which are so full of potential.

It's very sad when a teacher merely wants students to do well just so their reputations as teachers (as well as the school ranking/reputation) is maintained/elevated. It's even worse when teachers are able to bear grudges against their students and remember them for their mistakes.

When I think back I wasn't even sure I really wanted to teach when I took up the scholarship. At that time all I knew was I wanted to read music at Uni and the teaching scholarship was the only way to go. I just sort of hoped that things would turn out fine in the end. While I can't claim myself to be a staunch Christian, time and again it's just amazing how things always somehow seem to fall into place. Even when the going is rough at first and I feel like I don't know why I have to go through it, at the end of it I think I'm a better person for it and realize how it has helped me. Truly things happen for a reason. And I feel really lucky that I'm starting to appreciate why I'm teaching. Happy Teachers' Day!

Wednesday, August 27, 2003 + Sweet +

My day started absolutely crap. It was various things that added up and put me in a really bad mood. First I woke up to see that my clock read "07:00". Swearing I jumped out of bed and was out of the house in 10 minutes. After I finally got a cab, traffic on the CTE was extremely slow - as usual. When we finally got to the big cross junction along Bedok South Rd, the cab driver asked if he should make a turn up ahead. Of course, I took him to mean that he would go straight and do a u-turn - like all cab drivers so far have done. So I just said "yes", being too preoccupied in getting there on time to really think about what he meant.

The dolt turned right instead. I ended up getting off at the PE gate, which was of course locked as assembly had started. I told the cab driver, "Umm you were supposed to go straight and do a u-turn." To which he replied, "Huh? Either my way of communicating is very bad or you hearing is very bad." I knew he was joking but I was pissed already at being late. My face totally changed and I was like, "Rrrright." Fancy him saying that a music teacher's hearing is bad! I must say it was quite irrational for me to feel that way but I was rather miffed.

Anyhow, I finally made it to school to discover I had sooo many things to do. To top it off my fiance was too sleepy to listen to me complain and he would be too busy to meet his almost suicidal fiancee over the next few days. My mood was the blackest it has ever been since I've started teaching in TJ. I either wanted to kill someone or get run down by a car or something. ARGH.

But as the day wore on, especially after I had lectures with the Year 2s and 1s, I was my usual smiley self again. :) I'm so glad I have such sweet students. If I have students like that every single year I'd stay in teaching forever - admin work/politics notwithstanding. :P

I'm rather sad that time is passing as quickly as it is. I really like the current batch of year 2s a lot. They may whine and procrastinate but they're such sweet people. And even though Term 4 is barely here I know I'll be happy and yet sad when they finally do leave TJ. *sniffle* I'm so sentimental I make myself sick.

Well, I must say that one's students really make a LOT of difference to whether or not one is happy in school. I know mine sure do. :)

+ I'm beat +

Got back home from the Chamber Music Festival Masterclass held at the Esplanade not too long ago. If my hair weren't wet I'd be snug as a bug in lala land right now. Will make this a short one - my Pixel Train application has been approved! Yay! Also added a couple of cute little things to the site: built in clock and calendar. If you're into cute pixels do visit Angelic Network. She makes really neat stuff for websites if you're into that sort of thing. Visiting her site makes me feel inspired to make little pixels of my own. If you scroll down you'll see a little moving train with one wagon on it - I made that one little wagon myself using Animation Shop 3. Heeheehee.

Must be feeling frivolous now because I'm half 'gone'. My fellow 'newbie' teachers at TJC would say I'm like a dead fish. Hahaha. :) Okie, it's off to dreamland for me. Hope you guys had a good day, and will have a good day tomorrow too. Good night!

Monday, August 25, 2003 + Day off +

I got a day off today.

I got out of bed late and didn't go to school. I somehow twisted my knee sleeping on John's sofa and now it hurts whenever I try to bend it, walk or put weight on it. So I hobbled down to the doctor's and got a MC for today. Yay, a day off! :)

The upgrading at my place still hasn't finished. It has been at least 3 1/2 years, in the same amount of time or less they could have built a whole new block! Sheesh. Anyhow, I've been at home the whole day more or less listening to the sounds of the 'construction' going on outside (not like they seem to be constructing much nor at a very fast pace).

Apart from my knee I'm not feeling in the pink of health. I don't know why, I had loads of sleep yesterday. My head is throbbing, I feel a bit feverish and sick. I've been feeling like this since Friday afternoon. I thought I caught my student's throat infection. But my fiance thinks throat infections aren't infectious. I couldn't care less whether they really are infectious or not. I just want to not feel sick anymore.

+ House Warming Party +

I've moved house again - my blog that is.

I'd like to think of it as symbolic, a new blog for every new stage that life leads me through. I had http://rockerzgurl.blogspot.com when I was in London. Then it was http://lexia02.diaryland.com for when I was at NIE. And now that I'm out working -permanently- for the first time in my life, there is this - purple book. Why purple book?

I've liked the colour blue since I was 11 or 12. And that was due to this one character from David Eddings' 'Belgariad', a sorceress known as Polgara. She was everything that meant 'cool' to me. She was strong, stubborn, loving, sacarstic, 'streetwise', loved, feared, revered, humble, proud, knowing, powerful, powerless, resistant, flexible, unpredictable and reliable all at once. And she loved the colour blue. So, young and bewildered as I was, so did I. I loved blue for years, and gradually mellowed into the warmer and less commanding colour of purple when I was 20 or so. My students would say that purple is a sexually deprived colour - to which I violently disagree of course. But while I try not to be sexist in any way (neither am I a feminist, well I guess I like being a fence-sitter) I do raise an eyebrow at guys who claim to like purple - especially the lighter shades of the colour.

Why book? I love books. I'd rather spend $300 on building my library of books and CDs than on some branded handbag, makeup or clothes. Books fascinate me - an unread book is like an unsolved mystery. Books that have already been read are like planar portals which bring you back to something familiar yet foreign.

The previous two incarnations of my blog were sadly under utilized and I hope that this new one won't be so. But I'm not sorry for having kept them - barely surviving as they were. When I have the time I re-read what I wrote in those blogs. Most of the time I can't help laughing at what I wrote and feel ashamed at sounding so young and silly. But I guess we all go through that. We live in the moment and never stop growing. So I'm sure a few years down the line, I will read this blog and feel silly too.

Anyway I will try my very best to make this blog more successful and less neglected that my previous 2 ones. Silly or not. :)
